⚡Quick verdict

Most UK streaming apps stop working once you leave the country. iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Sky Go check where you are and block foreign connections, and the EU holiday rule stopped covering UK services after Brexit. Expats in Spain, Cyprus or Dubai mostly rely on satellite reception, VPNs (against the apps' terms) or IPTV.

  • Licensed UK apps are geo-blocked abroad, even if you pay for them at home.
  • A VPN can get round the block, but it breaks most apps' terms of use.
  • Live sport rights are sold country by country, so UK channels are not licensed for viewers abroad.

What happens to UK apps when you travel

Service Abroad
BBC iPlayer Blocked outside the UK
ITVX, Channel 4, My5 Blocked outside the UK
Sky Go Blocked outside the UK for UK customers
NOW UK only
Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video Work, but show that country’s catalogue

Before 2021, an EU rule let UK subscribers use their paid services on trips anywhere in the EU. That portability rule stopped applying to UK providers when the Brexit transition ended. Some services still allow short visits; most do not.

The four ways expats watch

  1. Satellite. In much of western Europe, a big enough dish still receives the free UK channels from the Astra satellites. Reception fades in the eastern Mediterranean and beyond.
  2. A VPN. It makes your connection appear to come from the UK. It works with some apps some of the time, and it breaks most of their terms of use. More in Do you need a VPN for IPTV?
  3. Local broadcasters. Premier League and Champions League games are shown in almost every country by whoever holds the local rights, often with English commentary available.
  4. IPTV. Independent services are the common choice among British communities in Spain, Cyprus, the Gulf and Australia, with the same legal questions as at home.

Time zones and kick-offs

The awkward part of supporting a UK club from abroad is the clock. A 3pm Saturday game is 4pm in Spain, 6pm in Dubai and 1am in Sydney during the Australian summer. Our kick-off converter shows the next games in your local time.

More questions

Can I use BBC iPlayer on holiday in Spain?
Not officially. The BBC blocks connections from outside the UK, and since Brexit the EU portability rule no longer obliges UK services to work during visits.
Does Freesat work in Spain?
In much of Spain, Portugal and France, a large dish can still pick up the UK satellite channels, though reception weakens further south and east. It is free once installed.
Will Telly Hub TV work abroad?
The service runs anywhere with decent broadband. Bear in mind that viewing outside the UK raises the same rights questions as inside it, set out on our legal page.
