Is a jailbroken Fire Stick legal?

⚡Quick verdict

A “jailbroken” Fire Stick is usually just one with apps installed from outside Amazon's store, which is legal and allowed in the settings. What makes it illegal is loading it with add-ons that stream pay channels without permission, and selling sticks set up that way has led to prosecutions. The stick itself is not the crime.

  • Sideloading through the Downloader app is a standard, legal feature.
  • Selling “fully loaded” sticks with unlicensed streams is a criminal offence.
  • Amazon's newer Vega OS sticks do not allow sideloading at all.

Where the word comes from

“Jailbreaking” began with iPhones, where it means breaking Apple’s software locks. Fire Sticks do not need anything broken: Amazon lets you install apps from outside its store by turning on a setting under Developer options. The word stuck because sellers liked the sound of it.

Action Legal?
Turning on “apps from unknown sources” Yes
Installing Downloader, VLC, Kodi or a player app Yes
Adding a licensed IPTV service to a player Yes
Streaming pay channels through unlicensed add-ons No
Selling sticks pre-loaded with unlicensed streams No, and prosecuted

Several UK sellers of “fully loaded” boxes and sticks have been convicted. The penalties for supplying unlicensed streams reach ten years under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act.

Amazon is closing the door

In 2025 Amazon launched the Fire TV Stick 4K Select running Vega OS, its own system in place of Android. It does not accept apps from outside the Appstore. Fire OS models still do, but Amazon has said it will block apps known for piracy on those too. If you are buying a stick for an IPTV player app, check which system it runs.

The sensible set-up

Install a well-known player app (our Fire TV Stick guide walks through it), add a service you have chosen with your eyes open, and avoid anything sold as “free sport forever”.

More questions

Is it legal to install Kodi on a Fire Stick?
Yes. Kodi is a legal open-source media player. Some third-party Kodi add-ons stream unlicensed content; those are the problem, not Kodi.
Can Amazon tell if my Fire Stick is jailbroken?
Amazon can see which apps are installed and has said it will block known piracy apps. It has not been known to report users to the police.
Which Fire Sticks can still sideload apps?
Fire OS models, including the Fire TV Stick 4K and 4K Max, still allow it with Developer options switched on. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which runs Vega OS, does not.
