⚡Quick verdict
An M3U playlist is a simple list, saved as a text file or served from a web address, that names each channel and the addresses of their streams. Player apps such as VLC, TiviMate and IPTV Smarters read the list and show it as a channel menu. It holds no video itself, only directions to where the video lives.
- M3U8 is the same format saved as UTF-8 text; HLS streaming also uses .m3u8 files.
- A separate EPG link (XMLTV) adds the TV guide.
- Xtream Codes log-ins are easier to type on a TV remote.
Inside a playlist
Here is roughly what a text editor shows when you open one:
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="ITV1.uk" tvg-name="ITV1" tvg-logo="https://cdn.example.org/logos/itv1.png" group-title="Britain | General",ITV1 HD
http://line.example.org:8080/live/user/pass/1234.ts
#EXTM3Umarks the start of the file.#EXTINFgives the channel’s details: its guide ID, its logo, the group it belongs to and the name you see.- Underneath sits the address the app fetches the stream from.
A full IPTV list repeats this for every channel, which is why big playlists run to many megabytes and can take a minute to load on a slow stick.
M3U, M3U8 and HLS
M3U began as a format for music playlists in the 1990s. M3U8 is that format saved as UTF-8 text, so names such as Telewizja Polska or العربية survive intact. Confusingly, the HLS streaming standard used by most live video also uses .m3u8 files, so the links inside your playlist often end in .m3u8 too.
Playlist link or Xtream Codes?
| M3U link | Xtream Codes | |
|---|---|---|
| What you enter | One long web address | Server, username, password |
| TV guide | Needs a separate EPG link | Comes with it |
| Film library | Often lumped in with channels | Separate, with posters and details |
| Typing on a remote | Painful | Easier |
Most people on a TV are better off with Xtream Codes details. An M3U link suits VLC on a computer, or apps that only accept a playlist. We send whichever your device needs.
